no time for love dr. jones

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

The only reason I went to graduate school is because of Raiders of the Lost Ark. That is perhaps really sad but it is also completely 100% true. But when you read all the reviews and see Jones referred to as a “pulp hero,” this is what they mean. Doc Savage was the pre-Indy Indy in 1930s-40s pulp magazines — going off on wild adventures dealing with relics, exotic tribes, and everything else in-between. He even had a Fortress of Solitude and a merry band of sometimes bumbling sidekicks. He also was referred to in advertisements by another name:

And oh yeah, Savage’s first name was CLARK.

Cue the Williams.

The given to all of this is that Superman is an imaginary figure involved in fictional events.

Isn’t he?

This little exchange will probably not make the final cut for a variety of technical and supernatural reasons, but I think it invites um…I don’t know. Questions about what gets a plaque maybe? Or how people interact with a fictional character. The sign is (for now) the only official marker in Cleveland about Superman; it is at a crowded intersection in a not-so-great part of town. And it has a massive, massive typo, which I actually kind of like.

Still, it has its fans, as my friend here explains.

I’ve been working on a promotional t-shirt design for awhile now. But as you know, I can’t really do the obvious and throw up a bootleg Superman shield with Rasta Bart or Calvin or something. Plus, I wouldn’t even want to: this isn’t a movie about Superman, it’s about his creators. And I respect the shield; I don’t own it. So this is a design I’m good with, but let me know what you think. And yes, like everything else, it is a clue.
